This grade II listed, terraced property in Greenwich was extended and reconfigured to help the homeowners achieve much needed additional space. When designing this single storey rear extension, we wanted to make sure that the result was interesting and beautiful, not just a functional square box. We also wanted to make sure that the space was flooded with light making it feel airy and contemporary. Importantly for the client, there needed to be a connection with the terraced garden not just from inside but also from outside, when looking back at the property. We also needed to ensure that the house could grow with them as they transitioned through various stages of their lives.
The new angled rear extension has an open plan kitchen/dining area connecting to a snug and utility zone which formed part of the old dining room. The kitchen benefits from new roof lights allowing natural light where it is most needed. There is also a larger roof light which runs across the new dining area as well as floor to ceiling glazing. Next to the dining area there are café style bifold windows which give the feel of alfresco living! A downstairs shower room has also been added to avoid walking through the master bedroom to use the loo!
Outside, the extension is cladded in zinc, which defines the old from the new. Looking back at the property, the cladding works well against the London bricks as well as all the copious greenery.
